The Four New Madrid Earthquakes Of 2012, 15 Nuclear Meltdowns, Mass Starvation, No Planning

Update: Thus article was written some time ago. It has sound information on what to expect but I have issued an update that includes information on the Louisiana sinkhole. Even at the time I wrote this older post I believed the New Madrid quakes would not be until 2013 and that the California quakes would follow. The first of four 8.0 or greater earthquakes struck at 5:45 AM on Wednesday July 4, 2012. Like the Christmas day New Madrid earthquake of 1699 it occurred on a holiday. And like the four quakes of 1811-1812 they all happened within 9 weeks. The last two quakes occurred on Tuesday September 11h. The shortest duration of any of the four quakes was 2 minutes and 47 seconds. The longest was the first which lasted 3 minutes and 12 seconds. There were thousands of smaller after shocks. Two of the four quakes actually did reverse the flow of the Mississippi river just like 2 centuries before. As in the previous quakes, the hardest hit areas were Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee and Illinois.

Unlike the quakes of 1811-1812 there were many more people living there today. The Chickisaw Indian tribe were the sole inhabitants of Memphis in 1812. 283 miles north of the Chickisaw was St Louis with only 1,200 people. Today their metropolitan areas have 1.3 and 2.8 million people. Most of the homes and businesses in the area were at least partially destroyed.

Amongst the other differences between then and now are electricity and nuclear power.

In the 2012 quakes the electric grid came down forcing the 25 nuclear power plants in the area to power down using batteries as their only source of electricity for cooling. This loss of nuclear power generation forced 72% of Americans to suffer rotating blackouts for months. Fistfights broke out in the California state legislature between the pro and anti nuclear shutdown factions. At issue were the Diablo Valley and San Onofre nuclear reactors near San Luis Obispo and San Diego which had been built on top of active earthquake fault lines.

The general American populace was not aware that most all nuclear power plants are not required to withstand any quake above 6.0. The Richter scale is logarithmic so any slight increase is actually exponentially greater. A 6.9 earthquake like the San Francisco quake of October 17, 1989 released the energy equivalent of 340 kilotons of TNT whereas an 8.35 quake releases 50 megatons.

Those Americans who relied upon the corporate media for their news were shocked to learn that nuclear power plants relied on the power grid for electricity to avoid a meltdown. And during a blackout created by an earthquake or any other natural disaster, the only power source to avert a meltdown were batteries that by law had only to last four hours. This failure to plan and to regulate led to 15 of 25 plants in the area having nuclear meltdowns. Areas within 30 miles of the 15 plants were immediately evacuated. But the wind carried radiation around the United States and the world. Even the poor became terrified of rainwater. Only the news flashes on their pocket radios telling them the rainwater was radiation free calmed them down.

Oil and natural gas pipelines from Oklahoma and Louisiana that used to transport energy across the New Madrid fault lines to the east coast were severed. A coal fired plant near New Madrid Missouri used to employ 200 people before the quakes of 2012. It used to burn a trainload of coal s day. The 1,200 people who used to work at the aluminum smelter next door lost their jobs when both plants collapsed in the second of the 4 quakes.

Modern cities rely on sewers, water pipes, gas lines, rail lines, gasoline storage, bridges, roads, freeways and their overpasses to be there. 9 oil refineries were damaged beyond repair. Roads, rail lines, bridges and pipes were moved 20 feet which brought civilization to a rapid halt. Most food spoiled in the first few days after each of the 4 quakes. The loss of refrigeration was a serious blow to the supply of food but far worse was the series of 15 nuclear meltdowns. Food production was irradiated. The President of the United States had to declare a ban on the exporting of food. But many countries had already declared a ban on all imports of American food until the situation of food safety could be properly evaluated. Food prices worldwide soared causing famines, riots and revolutions throughout the world.

The economic damage was far in excess of the trillion dollar plus immediate loss of life and property. Tens of millions developed cancers. The dollar had to be devalued 50% at a hastily convened G-20 Finance Ministers meeting in England on the weekend of September 22nd and 23rd . The devaluation of the dollar had been planned for soon after the 2012 election. The devaluation doubled prices which is to say it cut purchasing power in half. Fifteen million Americans were turned away from Food Stamp offices around America between the fourth of July and the end of the year. The 49 million Food Stamp recipients complained they only got enough food to last the first two weeks of the month. Food riots and random violence became endemic to American cities. Attempts to ration food were unsuccessful because the government had no food to offer and had lost control of the population within 3 weeks of last 2 quakes.

The billionaires of America moved to palatial estates in the Patagonian regions of Chile and Argentina to escape the radiation and the riots. They had sent their money overseas prior to the New Madrid quakes because they had already been told that the dollar was to be devalued.

Many young people moved overseas but most soon found immigration to desirable countries was limited. Canada became one of the first nations to declare a ban on all immigration from America except for a few skilled workers.

The millionaires who stayed behind in America were reduced to buying their food in underground co-ops at 3 times the price of commercial food stores. The wealthy had their food tested for radiation. Customers who took their own Geiger counters to supermarkets to test the food were arrested.

Americans became used to the new normal. Nobody at FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) or the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) were forced to resign.

Author’s Note: I wrote this because I want people to understand that they need to prepare for earthquakes in the heartland of America as well as in California. I wrote this because nuclear power plants need something better than 4 hour batteries to cool down during a blackout. I thought we had already learned this from Fukushima. And we were supposed to have learned that a nuclear power plant was the very last place you would want to store nuclear waste in the event of a meltdown.

I am not making any prediction either about when the New Madrid quakes will happen or how many separate quakes will occur.

I arbitrarily chose the fourth of July as the date of the first quake. I originally thought of setting it on the religious holiday Easter but that seemed too early in the year. I chose 9-11-2012 as the date of the third and fourth quakes because it was about 9 weeks after the first. And I thought that both the fourth of July and 9-11 have deteriorated into American state religious holidays. The New Madrid fault line historically does seem to like American religious holidays.

I had previously decided to leave this area as I live within the zone of the four previous New Madrid earthquakes. You need not disrupt your lives though I would not own a home in the area. But then owning a home anywhere in America is a losing proposition. My personal feeling is that the New Madrid fault will become active before the expected California quakes.
