We will not survive Big Ag and Big Pharma unless we construct an entirely new reality without them.
Big Ag uses NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium) fertilizers that are so expensive farmers are being bankrupted. No farms, no food. Big Ag tells us we need ammonia made from natural gas to feed nitrogen to our plants. We could sow cover crops like legumes and which fix nitrogen from the atmosphere into our soil. Or we could feed coffee grounds to worms in bins who freely give us complete amino acids in return.
Plants have 10,000 enzymes that perform repetitive tasks. One of those enzymes is nitrogenerase which makes amino acids from nitrogen. Amino acids in turn constitute complete proteins. If you feed your plants worm castings that have been fed coffee grounds, those worms will make amino acids so your plants can do other work like make polyphenols and fats.
Let me explain Brix before we proceed to the benefits of allowing your plants to become healthy enough to produce complete proteins, polyphenols and fats. Brix measures the sugar content of the plant you hope to eat. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) never score above 5 on the Brix scale as measured by a refractometer. Healthy plants score around 12, but I did see an organic grower whose grapes scored 15.5! That is astounding. He sells all of his grapes to a winemaker next door. We never see the best grapes in produce aisles in stores.
Dr Tom Dykstra is an entomologist. He tells us that plants in Africa that score high on Brix and have complete protein are bypassed by locusts. Because insects cannot digest complete protein they avoid eating our healthy plants as it would be fatal for them. It turns out that those antennae are useful to insects. Locusts avoid eating healthy plants and bees don’t waste their time pollinating flowers that have zero electrical activity.
Now we now why we need healthy plants. It saves us and the plants from insecticides. There is one group of people whose health we ought to be concerned with and that is farmers. Farmers are getting older – the average age ranging from 57 to 59 in the US, UK, Australia and Ireland. That average is going up despite a growing number of young people getting into farming. The problem is that pesticides and herbicides are killing farmers who are more exposed than we are. It was a farmer who won the lawsuit against Monsanto in which the court ruled that glyphosate causes cancer. I saw a video of a farm manager named Pedro who said the wives of illegal aliens told their husbands to work at his organic vineyard to avoid getting cancer.
Glyphosate is sprayed on wheat so all the plants die at the same time and are ready for the harvest in a single pass. I avoid American wheat for that reason and also because wheat, high fructose, corn syrup, sugar, processed food and potatoes score high on the glycemic index which makes us fat. It seems that normally your body burns fat, oxygen and sugar to give you energy. But, eat high fructose corn syrup and your body drives insulin so you will not burn either fat or oxygen until you burned off that sugar from the potatoes or the bread. That can takes hours but the next meal is still another opportunity to drive insulin and gain weight.
The other problem with the herbicide glyphosate is that it binds to minerals. In fact glyphosate was first patented in 1964 as a broad spectrum chelator, not as an herbicide.
Our soil is already deficient in boron, manganese, cobalt and molybdenum. Boron helps the germinating seed send down strong roots. It concentrates in cell walls where boron protects plants against both diseases and insects. Later on the plant needs boron for pollination. A farmer in Australia lost $7 million in corn production because his plants needed more boron. Molybdenum is needed for the enzyme nitrogenerase which makes amino acids. Cobalt makes vitamin B-12 for the plant’s roots. And manganese makes photosynthesis possible by splitting H2O into H and OH.
Glyphosate might kill weeds but binding to minerals like boron is what it was designed to do. Gltphosate will make you apply pesticide to protect your crop from the mineral deficiency your Monsanto salesman created.
It seems that GMO crops are extremely weak and designed to fail without expensive and unhealthy inputs that simultaneously poison us and make Monsanto-Bayer wealthy.
NAFLD (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease) can lead to diabetes, hepatitis, cancer, and cirrhosis. A diseased liver affects the body’s ability to digest food, metabolize hormones, regulate blood sugar, It is most likely cause by GMO High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). 24% of Americans have NAFLD.
Russian biologist Alexey V. Surov fed GMO soy to hamsters. By the third generation, only one female was capable of giving birth and 25% of her offspring died prematurely. Hair started growing in the mouths of her pups, They were stunted and sterile. Their internal organs including the testes, spleen and uterus were smaller than those of the other hamsters. An English scientist, Arpad Pusztai who reproduced the GMO experiments using potatoes was fired within days of announcing his results. He said rats that ate the GMO potatoes had pre-cancerous cell growths, smaller brains, livers and testicles, partial atrophy of the liver, and damaged immune systems. He said he would never eat any GMO foods. No human clinical trials have ever been conducted to prove GMO is safe for humans to eat.
Contrast that lack of science to prove the value of a GMO diet to what we know about polyphenols.
Research shows polyphenols can help manage blood pressure levels and keep your blood vessels healthy and flexible, promoting good circulation. They also help reduce chronic inflammation, another risk factor for heart disease. Polyphenols can reduce and help control your blood sugar levels and possess anti-microbial and anti-carcinogenic properties . The Rodale Institute once gave people $2,000 worth of organic vegetables. It did them more good than $20,000 of Big Pharma drugs, 94% of which don’t work
Most nations have either banned GMO foods or have required GMOs to be labeled as such which drives them out of the market place.
In the path of Buckminster Fuller, we must construct a new paradigm where we grow healthy soil so only healthy crops thrive. Dr Christine Jones and Nicole Masters have applied the lessons of the Jena project which has demonstrated through 85,000 scientific studies that bio-diversity, the practice of growing at least 16 different plants in one garden, not only makes soil grow but turns on soil biology by sending and receiving quorum signals.
It seems that each microbe has 100,000 receptors capable of receiving signals. When your soil biology – microbes, protozoa, arthropods, nematodes – are convinced there is sufficient diversity, they began to act collectively as if your garden had a collective mind.
Your plants use mycorrhizal fungi to get nutrients in exchange for sugars its leaves made in photosynthesis. But they also use those same fungi to communicate to other plants. A mother tree will send nutrients from herself to a daughter tree but not to a stranger.
If a tomato plant senses another tomato plant as its neighbor, it looks upon it as a competitor. But it thinks of garlic, leeks and carrots as beings worthy of co-operation. If a weed seed happens into your garden, it is sent a signal to not germinate but to let the wind blow it away to a yard where the owner has nothing but weeds and it will be happy.
We hear a lot of droughts and floods. There is one cure for both. Organic Matter in your soil consists of old leaves, dead roots and the like. For every 1% increase in Organic Matter in your garden, your soil can store additional 25,000 gallons of water. That is 94,636 liters of water per acre or 233,751 liters per hectare. Organic matter in your soil feeds soil biology. Soil biology breathes out Carbon Dioxide which feeds your plants. The soil biology aerates your soil – making small channels – so you can store 10 inches (25.4 cms) of rainfall without flooding. Or alternatively, the fungi can retrieve water from 20 feet below the surface to give your plant a drink in exchange for sugars.
That is why the earth warms and then we get more carbon dioxide. The soil biology beneath our feet are like bears. They hibernate until the ground warms up. Global warming is not a threat to our existence. In reality it provides food for hungry people.
